Picture first, then the line

A spec commercial for JJ’s Towing, a company that doesn’t exist. A donkey is parked under a NO PARKING sign. The voice-over names what you already saw. It plays deadpan: nothing in the frame knows it’s a joke, which is why the joke works.

I chose this idea over a harder film on purpose. It has no recurring character, no dialogue, and nothing to keep consistent from shot to shot, which are the things AI video handles worst. The job was to learn the tools on something small, and to finish it.

JJ’s Towing Company. Fifteen seconds, sound on. The scenes are AI-generated. The sign, the logo and every word on screen were made separately and put in afterward.

Read the script → The first draft, from August. It runs longer: the owner comes back for the donkey while the small print is read. The :15 ends on the logo.

Never let the model write

AI video models garble lettering, and this joke dies if the sign can’t be read. So the wall was generated with no sign on it. I built the sign in Illustrator and put it into the shot afterward. The same rule covered the logo and every other word on screen.

The rule earned its keep at the very end. Upscaling the finished scene to HD sharpened the small print under the sign into “FIBLATORS WILL.” The fix was to lay the sign back over the upscaled picture. Now any AI pass over a finished shot means re-checking every piece of type.

Concept, script and direction — Christopher Ward.
Scenes — generated with Kling, upscaled to HD with FLUX.
Sign, logo and type — made outside the video model and put in afterward.
Client — none. A spec piece.
